When instructional designers build faculty training, we mostly focus on pedagogy and the effective use of online tools and technology. We rarely include information regarding our role and responsibilities in developing the training because we assume that the faculty know who we are. Several articles have recently noted that faculty members have different perceptions of the ID role. One misconception is that IDs serve as technical support personnel or multimedia specialists. Although many IDs are technology savvy and skilled at multimedia development, their expertise goes beyond these areas to include learning theories. The misconceptions sometimes hinder productive ID-faculty collaboration. In this session, we invite participants to discuss ways we can minimize these misconceptions and share strategies to clarify the ID role. These strategies may be incorporated into formal faculty development programs, one-on-one consultations, learning materials, or informal conversations. The goals of this session include: (1) to describe current strategies that promote faculty understanding of ID role and (2) to identify challenges and opportunities that may emerge from including this topic in the faculty training.
