Hello.
Thanks so much for attending the workshop and posting your Implementation Plan. I enjoyed reviewing your file. You have a 5 week course with 25 hours delivery time reserved. I’d love to see how that ends up being mapped out. I know that is one of the areas you requested some feedback on in the post. I’d like to see what your final outline…[Read more]

Krista,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the workshop. It was such a great opportunity to share and connect with our colleagues throughout Florida! When I started to read your first takeaway I was going to encourage you to connect with Allison, but then I realized you’re both from UNF. It’s good to know you’re both on the same page! Lol!

Allison,
We certainly share some of the same concerns regarding participation in an online community and sustained engagement. One thing you listed that I think we could do a better job of on this site is “explaining the theory and research supporting learning communities.” Please let me know if you come across some resources that we might be able…[Read more] -

Wow, this is a short post full of BIG plans!
First let me thank you for your Phase 1 goals that involve sharing TOPkit with some many groups on your campus. I hope they find it equally useful, and encourage them all to participate in the community. Even though we’re neighbors, it can be challenging to get out of the office and see each other…[Read more]

Hi Geni,
I, too, find the Quality Matters (QM) rubric to be very comprehensive. (In full disclosure, I am a QM Face-To-Face Facilitator.) The rubric is based on a comprehensive literature review, and the annotations provide excellent rationale and examples for meeting the standards outlined in the rubric. The QM process is equally impressive.…[Read more]

Hi Otis,
Using social media is a great way for faculty to engage students, as it is undoubtedly part of our culture. Students increasingly socialize and network through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, SnapChat, Pinterest, Tumblr, Google+, and other social media platforms on a consistent basis. Why not meet students where they are–right?!?

Yes, I couldn’t agree more Michael! This tip becomes exponentially more valuable as class size increases. I often advise faculty if you get the same question from 2 students, consider messaging the class; if you get the same question from 10 students, consider revising your course content or adding a more detailed explanation via video. Wendy Howard replied to the topic Reducing the Noise – Targeted Communication in the forum Share an Effective Practice 8 years, 5 months ago
That sounds almost like the “Message Students Who” feature in Canvas. It’s true, people respond to personal messages – students, faculty, all of us. You point out a very good warning though. It could backfire if you overuse the “automated personalization” and they catch on.

I agree this is a great idea Ryan.
When I first read Allison’s post I was thinking in terms of designing a new course, but as I read your reply I started thinking this could also be a great tool for updating an older course. I suspect through the process of mapping out the current course organization, one would spot gaps or areas for improvement.…[Read more] -

Thank you for sharing this Alexandra. I didn’t realize Instructor offered this open course. I will definitely share it with our team. We’re working on a 1-pager quick guide for faculty who are recording their own videos in Canvas. I’ll come back and share that once it’s ready.
In the meantime, does anyone else have a quick tips sheet that we…[Read more]
